Most people know the expression the Dog Days of Summer, but many don’t really know what that means. The Dog Days of Summer refers to the period of time where Sirius, the “dog star” rises and set with the sun. It coincides with the hottest and most humid days of summer. Heat can affect people in many different ways, but a common problem associated with heat is an inability to get to sleep and sleep restfully. You may be asking yourself, what does this have to do with my feet?

It’s no secret that temperature and sleep are related. “Right before you fall asleep, your body temperature starts to drop; in the deepest stages of sleep, your body is at its coolest, about one or two degrees below normal.” (  Again, what does this have to do with our feet?

Well, our feet are special. It is a myth that we lose most of our heat through our head. In fact, only about 7% of our body heat is controlled by our head. A lot more is controlled by our feet. The feet contain what are called arteriovenous anastomoses. This means that the veins and arteries in our feet are connected. Because of this increased blood flow and combined with the lack of hair on our feet, our feet are the perfect thermo-regulators. So if you are looking to sleep better, try leaving your feet outside the covers. Avoid wearing socks to bed. Avoid anything that adds warmth or keeps the heat in.

If you are looking to sleep better, pay attention to your feet. I promise it will help.
